Dell has cut the online shopping choices it provides to users searching for a laptop pre-installed with Ubuntu.

The company now only offers one laptop with pre-installed Linux through its online store — the Dell Latitude 2100, which comes pre-installed with Ubuntu 9.04, though other Ubuntu-installed devices are available through phone sales.

The Ubuntu products do not come up in user searches because Dell has recently "made an effort to simplify our offerings online, by focusing on our most popular bundles and configuration options, based on customer feedback for reduced complexity and a simple, easy purchase experience," a Dell spokesperson told ZDNet UK on Monday.

"The reason why they're not on Dell's main pages is because Ubuntu systems are primarily targeted towards advanced users and enthusiasts, and the vast majority of consumers purchase PCs with Microsoft Windows pre-installed," the spokesperson explained. "So the changes are an effort to streamline and simplify our offerings on the main pages."

Dell currently offers Ubuntu 9.04 as the pre-installed operating system on the Inspiron 560, 560s and 570; Ubuntu 9.10 on the Inspiron 15 and 15R; and Ubuntu 10.04 on the Studio XPS 7100, Inspiron Mini 10 and the 10HD. Within Dell's small business range, Ubuntu is available on Vostro models including the 3300, 3500, 3700, 1015, V13.

ZDNet UK members have recently commented on Dell making widespread changes to its Windows or Ubuntu page on its website, with the current page giving less information Windows or Ubuntu? - Dell on Ubuntu's advantages.
