"Workstation applications are moving rapidly to systems based on the latest generation of Pentium processors and the Windows NT operating system," said Michael Dell, CEO and chairman in a prepared statement.

"This plays to Dell's long-standing strengths in an environment characterised by open industry standards. We will approach this market with the same commitment to price for performance leadership that has driven our outstanding growth in the global server market." Dell will also enhance its service strategy to cope with the move.

Separately, Dell said it would invest in software to better enable it to take orders over the Internet.
