Developers invited to create HTC-only Android apps

HTC has launched a developer site to encourage coders to write apps specifically for its Sense Android user interface.

The manufacturer is planning to release an OpenSense software development kit (SDK), chief executive Peter Chou said on Thursday at Qualcomm's Uplinq conference, where he also claimed that HTC was now the second-biggest Android developer after Google itself.

The SDK would allow developers to create apps using HTC-specific technologies, such as the special pen that comes with the company's Flyer tablet. It will also include an API for HTC's stereoscopic 3D technology.

However, it would also mean Android apps that only work on one manufacturer's devices, rather than being usable across the spectrum of Android phones and tablets.

According to HTCdev.com, the site will provide a "comprehensive resource for developers that will provide the core tools you need to develop your ideas specifically on HTC devices, including access to HTC OpenSense SDK, support, education, and enhanced services that will enable you to build, publish and promote your ideas".
