Dimension Data, Data#3 win AU$50M tech hospital contract

Summary:Dimension Data will manage the data coming out of the state-of-the-art Fiona Stanley hospital, while Data#3 has been brought on to help with network infrastructure.

Western Australia's Fiona Stanley hospital has brought on Data#3 and Dimension Data as it builds out more of the IT infrastructure that will help it live up to its title as the most technologically advanced hospital in the country.

Non-clinical equipment procurement for the hospital is being managed by Serco, which recently awarded British Telecom (BT) with a major contract to install a local area network (LAN) to connect each of the campus buildings together, supplemented with wireless connectivity.

Data#3 has now been brought on by Serco to work in conjunction with BT on the project. Its responsibilities will include supplying Cisco equipment and overseeing its installation and configuration. Together, both suppliers will also need to ensure the security of the network, such as incorporating two-factor authentication and performing periodic vulnerability scanning.

Dimension Data has also picked up a package of work responsible for the hospital's enterprise computing and storage requirements. This includes responsibility for managing the hospital's storage network and its stand-alone and blade servers, as well as backing up data to archival media.

Together, the Data#3 and Dimension Data contracts represent AU$50 million in value. While Data#3 group general manager Laurence Baynham declined to confirm the value of individual contracts, he said in a statement that it represents one of the largest in the company's history.

Serco has yet to announce two remaining packages of IT work that relate to software and services and facilities-management applications.
