You knew the trough was coming. Consider the following developments:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ETechnologies like Hadoop emerged so we could store data thrown off from applications and the Internet of things.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBusiness intelligence and the dashboards that went with it were lacking.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThe ability to store structured and unstructured data made us all information packrats.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EFirst movers---not surprisingly companies that were already leaders in their industries---swooped in with real returns and business use cases for big data projects.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ESecond, third and fourth movers jumped on the big data bandwagon only to find returns weren\u0027t so easy. First, the leaders gobbled up the low hanging fruit. Second, there was a reason these enterprises weren\u0027t first.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EArtificial intelligence emerged in systems such as IBM\u0027s Watson.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAnd visualization tools were either built into cloud applications such as Salesforce or Workday or brought to the enterprise masses via companies like Tableau.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EToday, you can\u0027t escape the Internet of things and all that data that\u0027ll be thrown off from devices. Let\u0027s table the discussion about what we\u0027ll do with that information. BeyondCore\u0027s product is 18 months old and has landed 23 Fortune 100 clients. BeyondCore\u0027s lead product, which takes any data with at least 1,000 rows (the more rows the better) and took eight years of research to develop, aims to tell the average business user a statistically significant narrative without a human question to initiate the discussion. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe key words in that previous sentence are statistically relevant and narrative. Sengupta\u0027s beef is that today\u0027s artificial intelligence is taking human intuition out of the equation. That movement means two things: First, we\u0027ll need data scientists to tell us what to do. Second, we\u0027ll be marketed magic boxes that aim to lead us. Either way we\u0027re outsourcing way too much intelligence and instead of becoming data savvy we\u0027ll just become visualization slaves. After all, we all look smarter with a fancy graphic to back us up. Computers compute and humans overlay their knowledge. But the real win is that all the narratives are built on statistically sound data---there\u0027s even a regression proof available (view source for data scientists)---so the business user can keep the wonks at bay. \u0022Humans look at graphs and get excited,\u0022 quipped Sengupta. \u0022The solution to the world\u0027s problems is not more data scientists. Hadoop is optimized for search and reducing data to something manageable via MapReduce. The emphasis is on the Map part of the equation. BeyondCore is optimized for the reduce part of the big data. \u0022So far big data has been about bragging about how much stuff you had stored in the attic,\u0022 said Sengupta. \u0022The promise of big data is broken.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESengupta has a lot of examples of how the new approach to artificial intelligence and data needs to work. For instance, BeyondCore highlighted how young women with diabetes had a 49 percent rehospitalization rate. Out of 30 million patients, the natural conclusion was that there was some gender issue or drug reaction. Turns out that many women weren\u0027t taking insulin because they gain weight. A box that requires you to ask a question probably couldn\u0027t deliver that insight. \u0022How would a researcher know to look at that question?\u0022 asks Sengupta.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDue to the current state of big data and the intersection with artificial intelligence, Gartner created a category dubbed \u0022smart pattern discovery.\u0022 These vendors are likely to spring up to make sense of data lakes. These vendors are also likely to be acquired because there just aren\u0027t enough people to manage the data or interpret it. Five years from now we\u0027re going to need to bring statistically relevant data to business users. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022I don\u0027t believe in magic models.
