Disney set to drop an Android-powered smartphone in Japan

Disney is getting ready to launch a smartphone in Japan, which already has some tech followers buzzing about the choice of an Android 2.2 operating system.

Naturally, there's a bit of surprise given that Disney would power a smartphone with Android rather than iOS given Steve Jobs' placement on Disney's board of directors. However, powering a Disney smartphone just doesn't seem like Apple needs to bother with, so Android is an apt enough choice.

Froyo will be given a bit of the Mouse House treatment with Mickey and Minnie emoticons and home screens. (And just look at the rather nice cases below. They could be a lot worse, but these are quite simple and even artistic. Buyers will get to choose one for free.) Other specs include an HD camera, flash support and a LCD touch screen.

Disney Mobile Japan promises more information at the end of January, so stay tuned if you're interested in booking a ticket to Tokyo now.
