Dixons Carphone signs Three deal, aims at Internet of Things

Retailer signs MVNO deal to sell mobile service to customers buying hardware.

A lot of the attention for the nascent Internet of Things (IoT) focuses on the gadgets themselves - and not on how they plan to communicate.

But now retail group Dixons Carphone has announced it has signed a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) deal with mobile operator Three to launch its own mobile service. The retailer hopes, according to the Financial Times, to sell the service to customers buying connected devices such as TVs and laptops.

"We will have something different from what is available elsewhere in the market, with a more personalised service for the mobile customer that will let them tailor their price, minutes, and data to their changing needs," Graham Stapleton, who runs Carphone Warehouse operations, told the FT.

In October 2014 Dixons Carphone said it was targeting what it estimated was a £5bn opportunity to service the IoT. At that time, Dixons Carphone group services director, John Hunter, told The Drum that the Iot "is an underpinning factor of why we brought Dixons and Carphone Warehouse together at the time we did."

"It is pretty much what all of our suppliers want to talk about," he said.

Dixons Carphone is planning to launch its service later this year.
