Musician Thomas Dolby's company Beatnik on Thursday became the latest company to back a new type of software file for playing music on cell phones. Beatnik, which sells a way to deliver music to wireless devices, said its products will support a music software standard called extensible Music Format (XMF), which creates music files that are 100 times smaller than an MP3 file.

XMF has been approved as a possible standard by several music bodies, including the MIDI Manufacturer's Association, and the Association of Musical Electronics Industry of Japan. --Ben Charny, ZDNet News
