E-commerce surges in fourth quarter

Retail U.S. e-commerce surged to $43.4 billion in the fourth quarter, up 11 percent from a year ago, according to comScore.

Among the key data points from comScore:

  • The 2010 shopping season reached $1 billion in sales a few days.
  • Software, toys, consumer electronics, books and magazines, computers/peripherals and PDAs has 15 percent growth or more.
  • The top 25 online retailers represented 68.4 percent of all dollars spent, that's up from a year ago, but down from the third quarter.
  • 84 percent of Internet had an online transaction.
