E-minister backs unmetered access

Hewitt commits to unmetered Internet tariffs
Written by Jane Wakefield, Contributor

E-minister Patricia Hewitt joined the unmetered access bandwagon Thursday.

Speaking at the UK Internet summit in London, Hewitt confidently declared the government "has got its act together" on Internet policy. Admitting there was more to do to open up the telco market, she put her foot firmly in the unmetered camp.

"We need a variety of tariffs and those should certainly include unmetered. It should certainly be on offer from one or more providers," she said. Hewitt also reiterated the government's commitment to push the e-communications bill through in the forthcoming session of parliament and promised announcements "soon" on the auction of third generation mobile spectrum.
