eBay plans second development center in India

eBay has named the Indian city of Bangalore the site for its second development center in the country, as it looks to tap the local software talent pool to support its business.

In a statement released Tuesday, the online commerce companysaid the new facility will feature several centers of excellence and hire up to 1,000 technology professionals over the next three years to support its growing Marketplaces and PayPal business units.

Available positions include senior technologists with product development experience across functions such as research, platform and application development, architecture, quality engineering, product management, marketing and product analytics, user experience and design, and information security, it added.

The new facilty will build on eBay's existing presence in India including its first development center in Chennai and country business unit in Mumbai.

Anupam Pahuja, general manager at PayPal, said in the statement: "We are looking to tap the large pool of software engineering talent in Bangalore to come innovate with us and create the future of commerce...and see them as a critical driver for the long-term success of PayPal's global payment platform."

eBay has high hopes the Indian online shopping market will help generate revenue. It earlier revealed it was looking to change India's online shopping habits from buying electronic gadgets and books, which had lower profit margins and required less frequent purchases, to buying high-margin products such as clothes and shoes.
