HONG KONG - M-commerce (mobile commerce) is all about using mobile technology to perform transactions, taking business outside the office walls.

EdgeMatrix and iPlanet recently demonstrated a location-based solution that enables m-commerce at the ITU Telecom Asia 2000 tradeshow being held in Hong Kong.

The location-based solution uses iPlanet's Internet Service Deployment Platform and the EdgeMatrix Xgate multichannel gateway server to provide mobile m-commerce transactions to take place.

In a demonstration at the tradeshow, an m-commerce transaction is initiated via wireless marketing by a company. A mobile phone user is alerted when he is in the vicinity of that company providing special offers to nearby customers.

Using his mobile phone, the user may indicate interest in the special offer. He may inform friends nearby who may also be interested. They can then indicate their responses which are consolidated by the company.

The m-commerce solution also consists of Cap Gemini’s M-Publish system which directs the business logic.
