EE extending 4G coverage to 27 more towns
EE, the first network in the UK to get its 4G services up and running, will extend the reach of 4G LTE to 27 new towns by the end of June, taking the total to more than 65.
The company (an amalgamation of Orange and T-Mobile in the UK) said its 4G service would cover 55 percent of the country's population by the end of June this year.
"The 4G rollout, which offers customers speeds up to five times faster than 3G, is proving a huge success with UK businesses, including Addison Lee, Foxtons, Gatwick Airport, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Kier, Microsoft, Morrisons, Sony Music, TNT Post and Urban Outfitters, who are already reaping the benefits of increased efficiencies and productivity both in and out of the office," the company said in a statement.
The new towns to receive the services will be: Aldershot, Ashford, Basildon, Basingstoke, Blackpool, Bracknell, Camberley, Colchester, Crawley, Farnborough, Guildford, Horsham, Huddersfield, Leatherhead, Maidstone, Milton Keynes, Oldham, Oxford, Redhill, Reigate, Sevenoaks, Stevenage, Tonbridge, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Warrington, Wigan and Woking.
In January, EE announced it was extending coverage to include nine more UK towns and cities and also effectively reduced the pricing of some of its 4G service plans.
While it was the first company to get its services live, the UK's 4G spectrum auction is now under way, paving the way for competitors to launch rival services within a few months of the auction closing.
EE also said in January that it would be closing 78 of its high street stores in areas where there were other outlets close by.
