Richard Egan, co-founder of storage giant EMC and former US ambassador died in his home on Friday after a long battle with lung cancer.

"On behalf of more than 40,000 EMC employees from around the world, we extend our deepest condolences to Mrs Egan and the entire family. Thirty years ago this week, Dick founded EMC with his partner, Roger Marino," Joseph Tucci, EMC chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement.

Egan was EMC CEO until 1992 and chairman until 2001, leading the company to its IPO. From September 2001 to January 2003, Egan was the US ambassador to Ireland.
