Qualcomm Inc. denied Thursday that it is pulling the plug on its Eudora e-mail client but refrained from commenting on plans for the rest of its Eudora software wing.

"We still remain committed to Eudora," said spokeswoman Christine Trimble. "While it's not a key part of our software strategy, it's still a useful platform for our wireless data." However, Trimble declined to comment specifically on the fate of individual products within the Eudora group, including its Eudora Planner personal information manager.

According to sources, the company has ceased development of Planner 4.0; the cross-platform PIM was one of the software packages San Diego-based Qualcomm acquired when it bought Now Software Inc. of Portland, Ore., in November 1997. Sources said Qualcomm has been dissatisfied with the pace and quality of Planner 4.0 beta releases.

Sources this week told MacWEEK.com and other Mac-focused Web sites that Qualcomm is considering killing its entire Eudora software division. They said that in contrast to the company's burgeoning wireless telecommunications business, the Eudora division has been losing money since the Now acquisition.
