European Union approves creation of .eu domain

Europe is to have a unique new identity on the Internet after the European Union approved the creation of domain names ending .eu Wednesday

The EC's Council of Ministers voted that the new domain be available to institutions, private users and corporations within Europe.

It is hoped that the creation of this new domain will consolidate the identity of pan-European businesses and boost the prestige of Europe's Internet industry as a whole.

The European Commission decided that the domain may be maintained by a unique non-profit organistion but that it will be protected by ICANN ( Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

ICANN hopes that the creation of extra domains will help stem the growing nuisance of cyber-squatting and recently supported the creation of a whole range of new addresses.
