Plenty of software companies are attempting to simplify and automate back office processes for small businesses in the cloud, without overly complicating matters for companies that traditionally have limited IT resources.

Exact Online -- which is backed by a company with more than 30 years experience in development manufacturing software applications -- is explicitly focused on small manufacturers and wholesale distributors that are struggling to integrate separate processes, including production, inventory and customer relationship management (CRM).

"There has been an upswing in domestic manufacturing, and we want to give these folks the ability to scale their capabilities. We also want to give them the ability to scale down when necessary," said Steve Leavitt, general manager of U.S. cloud solutions, Exact Online.

The service, which has been in controlled release since July 2013, boasts a "seamless" integration with both QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, providing small companies with a more comprehensive view of their entire business.

One early customer is Dillaman Mold & Manufacturing, a small two-person precision maker of plastic injection molds and components in Pennsylvania. Dillaman was already using another Exact software application, but wanted the remote access capabilities that a cloud solution could provide, having had experience with QuickBooks Online, said Chad Dillaman, owner of the company. "It's a lot easier for me to see where things are in the company without having to log into two different systems," he said.

Exact Online has been especially helpful during the quoting process, helping Dillaman stagger jobs and ensure that quotes are more accurate, he said. "It helps me know how much I need to work, and what I can take on," he said.

The service carries a flat fee of $299 per month, for the first company and user. After that, the per-user or per-company pricing is $29 per month.
