Facebook Messenger hits 1 billion monthly active users

Messenger joins Facebook's flagship app, as well as the Facebook-owned WhatsApp, in hitting the milestone.

Four years after it released as its own app, Facebook Messenger has more than 1 billion monthly users, the social networking business announced Wednesday.

Facebook pushed its users to Messenger by cutting off ways to access Facebook conversations outside of the app. It also beefed up Messenger as a means for which other companies could engage with consumers; there are now apparently more than 18,000 bots on the platform, up from 11,000 just a few weeks ago.

As Facebook noted, only a handful of apps have hit 1 billion monthly active users -- and they happen to include Facebook's other messaging service, WhatsApp, as well as its flagship app.
