Facebook SDK for Android updated more sharing, Open Graph tools

Summary:Approximately 73 percent of the top 100 grossing Android apps are now integrated with Facebook, according to the social network itself.


Facebook is rolling out a heavy software upgrade for its Android SDK, packed with new developer tools aimed to better facilitate sharing content as well as tap into the Open Graph.

The world's largest social network has been busy pushing its mobile-first agenda for quite some time now, and Android plays a huge roll in that.

The engineering team, which has offices scattered across New York City, Seattle and the Menlo Park headquarters in Silicon Valley, cited that 73 percent of the top 100 grossing Android apps are now integrated with Facebook.


Here's a rundown on some of the updates:

  • Share Dialog for Android: A more consistent way to enable sharing, without needing to login to Facebook first. With one line of code now, developers can save users from three extra steps so they can immediately share content to Facebook.
  • Object API: Facilitates integrating the Open Graph into Android apps. Developers can now directly create Open Graph objects without having to host webpages with Open Graph tags.
  • Redesigned Login UI: Refreshed design boasted to look better but without any code changes. Also converts at a higher rate
  • Beta launch of the ability to publish and measure app events for Android apps.

On the last bullet point, Facebook software engineer Chris Lang further explained further in a blog post on Tuesday that developers can now measure the aggregate number of times a predefined action was taken within an app, which should help them better understand engagement and ROI coming from mobile adds on Facebook.

Previous versions of the SDK allowed developers and advertisers to measure installs driven from our mobile app install ads product. With app events, you can now also measure the aggregate number of times a predefined action was taken within your app, such as 'add to cart' in a commerce app, 'level achieved' in a game, or other custom events that help you understand the engagement and ROI coming from your mobile ads on Facebook. Over the next several months, we will be working on improving our optimization and insights and developing new features that will further leverage app events.
