Several raids in the Indian cities of Delhi and Mumbai have turned up counterfeit Hewlett-Packard laserJet and inkjet cartridges.

A HP spokesperson said that the police--together with "HP's trained product identification experts"--acted on intelligence gathered from various sources, including tip-offs from affected customers. HP said it plans to step up its efforts to combat piracy in India next year. This will include working closely with the local authorities to clamp down on pirates, as well as educating consumers about the importance of purchasing genuine products, with tips on how to detect fake ones, the company noted.

Some of the tell-tale signs of counterfeit HP cartridges include inferior print quality, tampered packages, incredibly low prices (of up to 20 percent on certain instances) and higher-than-normal failure rate, according to HP. --Irene Tham, Special to ZDNet News
