Fall sees sports fans take to the Net

Sports sites saw their numbers shoot up in September.

Sports fans turned to the Internet in increasing numbers during the month of September, according to the latest statistics from online measurement service, NetRatings Inc.

Activity on sports sites jumped from 6.9 million users in August to 10 million in September, a gain of 44.5 percent. Sites with the most growth included NFL.com (72.5 percent), Sportsline.com (56.3 percent), FoxSports.com (51.2 percent), SportingNews.com (18.6 percent) and MajorLeagueBaseball.com (13.0 percent).

Other ratings
Traffic on financial sites was up as well, with an overall gain of 41 percent and 11.2 million users. Sites showing the largest increases in unique audience were: FirstUnion.com (32.6 percent), Fidelity (31.7 percent), WellsFargo.com (30.3 percent) and FirstUSA.com (26.2 percent).

America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL), Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO), MSN, the Lycos Network, and the Go Network continue their reign as the top five most visited Web properties.

Encyclopedia.com takes the award for the Web site showing the most growth for the month of September. NetRatings estimates the site's unique visitors grew by 128 percent.
