FCC/state PUC task force moves forward on E911 rules

Summary:Following up on the FCC's e911 rules created in May, which dictate that VoIP providers to handle 911 calls, the FCC and the National Association of announced July 25 the creation of a joint task force comprised staff from the FCC and state public utility commissions, working wit public safety personnel. The task force will look at developing materials to educate VoIP consumers about the e911 rules, as well as to share best practices and set enforcement procedures.

Following up on the FCC's e911 rules created in May, which dictate that VoIP providers to handle 911 calls, the FCC and the National Association of announced July 25 the creation of a joint task force comprised staff from the FCC and state public utility commissions, working wit public safety personnel. The task force will look at developing materials to educate VoIP consumers about the e911 rules, as well as to share best practices and set enforcement procedures. Adopted on May 19, the VoIP E911 rules require VoIP providers to deliver all 911 calls to the local emergency operatior, provide callback numbers and location information of their customers, and inform customers of their E911 capabilities and limitations.
