Five years ago: HP outputs photo-quality DeskJet

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has released the DeskJet 690C, an inkjet printer that can output glossy, photo-like images.
Written by Martin Veitch, Contributor

The 690C supports HP's proprietary photographic output capability, using HP's Photo Cartridge and Photo Paper to produce high-gloss images. HP expects most users to come from SoHo and specialist sectors, saying the unit is ideal for making greeting cards, stickers and iron-on transfers.

The Photo Cartridge slots in alongside the unit's standard colour cartridge. The DeskJet 690C is also the first printer that supports HP's new Photo REt, an enhanced version of its current Resolution Enhancement Technology used on all its printers. The units can print monochrome at up to 5ppm, and colour at up to 1.7ppm.

List prices start at £262 + VAT with the Photo Cartridge a £28.60 + VAT option and Photo Paper costing £8.50 + VAT for 20 sheets.

HP's Customer Information Centre can be contacted by telephone on 0990-474747. Readers should quote the reference number 6860.
