Five years ago: Net business growing but home use is flat

The Internet may be in a position to lose its 'toy' reputation and be seen as a real business tool if a US survey by Inteco is to be believed

According to the market researcher's data based on interviews with 2,661 households, 23 million adults used the Internet or online services at work or in education in September 1996, up sharply from 17 million in May. In the same period, home use stayed level at 10.3 million adults.

According to Microsoft, the UK has about 1.6 million Web users.
