Cisco has signed a strategic agreement with Flinders University that will see the establishment of an academy at the university's new Tonsley Park building in which staff of the networking giant will train students as part of their degrees to work with the newest technologies in the digital space.

Cisco ANZ vice president Ken Boal said the initiative will provide a platform that could lead a number of significant benefits.

"These include job creation and increased support for disciplines that will be impacted by the Internet of Everything and be extremely important to meeting the future challenges of social and economic issues, such as cyber security, for Flinders University, as well as for the wider South Australian community," he said.

Flinders University has invested AU$14 million as part of the agreement.

Flinders University vice-chancellor professor Michael Barber said the University was excited to be able to offer a range of new opportunities for students, staff, and researchers.

"Access to Cisco's global network and industry experience will ensure that Flinders remains at the forefront of the technological revolution," he said.

"This extends our longstanding relationship and further confirms Flinders' mission to foster strong and effective collaborations with business and the community."

The Flinders-Cisco arrangement has already led to the development of a Wi-Fi network at Flinders' Bedford Park campus that provides students and staff access to high definition video and video conferencing, with gigabit speeds on IEEE 802.11ac.

This agreement forms part of Cisco's ongoing Internet of Everything game plan. Last Friday, the company announced it intended to buy Assemblage, a producer of real-time collaboration apps for shared whiteboarding, presentation broadcasting, and screen-sharing.

Cisco also announced it was ramping up its investment in the Internet of Things startups around the globe by US$150 million.
