Ford targets mobile apps for in-car use

The car manufacturer is encouraging software developers to design and adapt mobile apps for voice recognition and in-car usage
Written by Larry Dignan, Contributor

Ford on Friday launched a software development kit so that developers can tailor their smartphone apps for voice recognition and in-car usage.

The car maker, which made the announcement at CTIA in San Francisco, said it is looking to build an ecosystem for its Ford Sync system, which primarily depends on voice recognition. Ford's plan seems to be to leverage existing apps its drivers already know and make them car friendly.

According to the company, mobile developers are keen to exploit the in-car experience. Ford says it has reviewed more than 1,000 submissions from developers proposing new apps or modifying existing ones. Ford has also launched a developer website.
