foxL v2: Silky-sounding Bluetooth speakers for iPhone, iPad

Summary:The foxL v2 Bluetooth speaker dock may be the perfect acoustical companion to the iPhone and iPad.

Everyone's used a "speaker dock" at one point or another so the concept is pretty straightforward: better speakers for your small media device. Although most speaker docks sound great, they can lack in convenience. You have to make sure that you have the right dock setup or you need different cables for non-Apple devices, connectivity can be a drag. That's where Bluetooth comes in.

The foxL v2 ($199 SRP, $169 on Amazon) is portable Bluetooth speaker from Soundmatters that harnesses Bluetooth to provide external audio from any device that supports it. It turns the lifeless shrill of your iPhone speaker into the thumping life of the party. Obviously, it isn't going to replace the booming bass of a larger speaker, but I was amazed at the sound produced by such a compact set of drivers.

Keeping in mind their physical space constraints, Soundmatters twin 25mm dome drivers, or "Twoofers" as they're caller (a clever combination tweeter/woofer) sound wonderful. The sound output from the foxL ranges from 80Hz and 20kHz and is surprisingly rich and well-suited for use on the beach or at the pool. It's loud enough to fill a noisy room and can be heard over the drone of a power boat. Its compact size and great sound make it the perfect iPhone or iPad companion.

At just 5.6" wide x 2.2" high x 1.4" deep the foxL v2 is perfect to grab-and-go, ideal for stuffing into a bag and taking with you to the pool, beach, boat or bringing with you in the car. In fact it's a great substitution for that Bluetooth car integration that you've been coveting. Just toss it on the dash, center console or passenger seat, fire up an audiobook, podcast or audio track and you'll be there before you know it.

It runs for up to 8 hours on a charge (or about 2-4 if you're really jamming). Engadget concluded that the foxL generally sounds better than the Jawbone Jambox, but I haven't tested the Jambox personally and will reserve my opinion until I do. The foxL has a five-star rating on Amazon and a four-star review by CNET Reviews and finally, here's a video review on YouTube so that you can see it in action.
