Freeserve clocks up 900,000 members

Proving that the free model works, Dixons' five month old service, Freeserve, has dethroned the mighty AOL

Freeserve, the UK's fastest growing ISP has clocked up 900,000 accounts it was announced today.

Launched in September 1998 by Dixons group, Freeserve is one of nine new free ISPs in the UK. Commenting on the latest figures, Mark Danby, general manager of Freeserve said: "It shows we have developed the right formula for our customers and that you don't have to pay for a first class internet service."

Secretary general of ISPA Nicholas Lansman said: "They are incredible figures. We seem to have a new economic model on our hands and it could be other ISPs will offer free access too. It's good news for the consumer and the Internet as a whole."
