Freeserve gets into insurance

Free ISP teams with GlobalNet and Cox to launch insurance service.

Not to be outdone by lively little red phones offering insurance online, Freeserve is teaming up with GlobalNet UK and Cox Insurance to launch an online insurance shop, it was announced Monday.

The deal is the latest in a package of financial services from Freeserve, which floated in July. The service -- InsuranceCity.com -- offers online trading, and some experts expect a Freeserve banking service in the future.

The offering, due in October, will give consumers instant quotes from "a panel of top UK insurers" and the chance to buy policies online. Initially the service will offer car, home and travel insurance, with more specialised cover to be offered in the New Year.

Last month Direct Line launched a similar service, Directline.com, widely advertised on television with a bleeping red telephone mascot.
