Days after announcing a 17% price cut, Sony decides to phase out the $499 PlayStation 3 games console, leaving US buyers with a choice - buy the 80GB PS3, or buy something else.

The $499 PS3 will continue to be offered for sale until current stocks are depleted.  Sony says that they it currently has ample supply (estimates suggest 2 - 3 million) of the budget console, so if you've been pondering a purchase for a while, now's the time to make a decision.

Many are expecting that the 80GB model will come down to $499 shortly after stocks of the 60GB model have run out, but Sony won't comment on this at present.
