Gizmo Project A "Skype-Killer?" I set out to find out

Lately, the hype machine has gone into overdrive about the Gizmo Project.

As you may know, the Gizmo Project is an open-standards initiative from the folks who built SIPphone VoIP platform- one which enables building of free VoIP services.

So OK, let us give the Gizmo Project credit for being on the side of the angels. But, can it be true- as the open-standards spin machine likes to say - that the Gizmo Project is a Skype-killer?

Rather than simply give genuflecting props to the egalitarian-driven mission of the Gizmo Project, I decided to do something more complete. Download their new softphone and compare it to Skype.

I aimed to compare:

  • Gizmo Project's rates vs. those of Skype.
  • Gizmo Project's soft phone vs. Skype.
  • Gizmo Project's call quality vs. Skype.

Is Gizmo Project a "Skype-killer" No. But that's not to say it cannot be a worthy competitor.

In my next post, read my comparison of Gizmo Project's and Skype's rate structure.
