Google announced Thursday that it's acquiring Anvato, a video software platform used by major media companies like NBCUniversal, CBS and HGTV. Anvato enables media outlets to encode, edit, publish and securely distribute video content across multiple platforms. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In a blog post, Google senior product manager Belwadi Srikanth wrote that the Anvato platform will complement Google's efforts to "enable scalable media processing and workflows in the cloud."

"The Google Cloud Platform team is committed to helping our customers in the media and entertainment industry manage their infrastructure more efficiently, provision servers and networks at rapid scale and remove unnecessary overhead," he wrote.

The acquisition should help the Google Cloud Platform better compete against other enterprise storage providers for media business. Currently, Netflix relies on Amazon Web Services, even though Amazon directly competes against Netflix with its own video streaming service. Meanwhile, IBM earlier this year announced its acquisition of Ustream and its creation of a cloud video platform.

In March, Google announced it was signing on some major enterprises, including Disney Consumer Products Interactive Media.
