An official “Gmail Alerts Manager” is on the ready to advise Gmailers of “valuable information” regarding technical issues effecting Gmail accounts.

Tuesday was a busy alert day for Mr. or Ms. Gmail Alerts Manager in Google Groups discussion forums:

11:07am

We are aware of a problem affecting a subset of our users. Our engineers are currently working to find a solution. We expect to have a fix as soon as we can.  We appreciate your patience, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

2:42 pm:

To clarify, the problem we are referring to in the previous post concerns a percentage of our users seeing 'Server Errors' and 'Oops' messages when trying to log in to their Gmail accounts. We realize that many of you depend on Gmail to communicate and assure you that all hands are on deck to fix the error. While we do not have an exact time until resolution to offer, this is currently our top priority and we'll continue to post updates as they become available.

4:24pm:

We have identified the root of this problem and are still working as hard as we can to find a solution. We want to make sure you know that we haven't forgotten you, and we sincerely apologize for the ongoing inconvenience.

5:23pm

A subset of affected users should now have restored access to their accounts, but may experience some mail delivery delays. For those still affected, we're still working to get you back up and running.

7:00pm

We continue to make progress restoring access for many users and user reports have confirmed that more affected users are now able to successfully log in to their accounts. We remain committed to resolving the issue for every affected user and greatly appreciate your continued patience.

11:56pm

The account errors some of you have been experiencing are now resolved for the vast majority of users. You may experience some delays in mail delivery, although we expect these to be resolved shortly. A small group of accounts, however, may continue to show errors, and we'll be watching these errors closely to ensure they're fixed as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience today and appreciate your patience.

As I indicated earlier this month Google Apps: Gmail SLA jury still out!
