Google's core business is search, not spreadsheets or photo albums. The just released U.S. government search is a good example of how the Google is spreading out, going vertical, to leverage its reach, infrastructure and technology. As the Washington Post reports, several government search engines already exist, but they will have a tougher time with Google in the game. You can can imagine, the next logical step--Google government search for every country that provides publically accessible info, and more vertical search engine slices that poke into the dark matter, the data not easily accessible on the Internet.
