Apple today announced – via a huge banner on their Web site – that over 500 million apps have been downloaded from the App Store on iTunes.Update: This means that (roughly) 200 million apps were downloaded in the last six weeks.

Apple today announced – via a huge banner on their Web site – that over 500 million apps have been downloaded from the App Store on iTunes.

Update: This means that (roughly) 200 million apps were downloaded in the last six weeks. That's 4.76 million apps per day (or 55 apps per second.) At this rate, assuming no acceleration, Apple would hit the 1 billion download mark some time around 24 April 2009.

Here are the milestones:

  • 10 July 2008 – App store opens
  • 14 July 2008 – 10 million downloads in first weekend
  • 09 September 2008 – 100 million downloads (press release)
  • 21 October 2008 – 200 million downloads (conference call)
  • 05 December 2008 – 300 million downloads
  • 16 January 2009 – 500 million downloads
