New OfficeConnect networking products and learning tools provided by 3Com's small business communications solutions expects to speed up online business applications while at the same time protecting business-critical information
SINGAPORE - 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) has expanded its OfficeConnect family of small business solutions by speeding up online business applications, protecting business-critical information and simplifying the management of network connections.

The new solutions and learning tools include a dual-analog 56K Internet device, a new easy-to-use wizard to set-up the OfficeConnect Internet Firewall 25 and OfficeConnect Internet Firewall DMZ, a new version of its popular OfficeConnect Network Assistant CD-ROM, and two new online Learning Center courses.

"With this announcement, 3Com customers now have more options to securely access the Internet. Plus, the Learning Center courses and Network Assistant underscore 3Com's commitment to inform small businesses about networking and Internet communications, enabling them to deploy solutions that best meet their needs."

The recently released "2000 U.S. Small Business Survey" by Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, Inc., a research and consulting firm based in New York and focused on global small and medium-sized businesses, reported that 3Com outperformed its competitors for the second year in a row.

3Com Small Business Solutions and Tools

3Com's new OfficeConnect Internet access products enable small business customers to implement high-speed, secure communications.

The new OfficeConnect Dual 56K LAN Modem enables a user to dial out to two different locations simultaneously or dial in remotely, as well as achieve near-ISDN speed by making a dual 56 Kbps connection.

The OCLM Dual 56K Internet access solution has been designed so that people with limited or no technical expertise can easily install and use the product.

New OfficeConnect Firewall Security Set up and Management
The new network management wizard, built into 3Com's family of OfficeConnect firewall security products, enables people with limited or no technical expertise to secure their business information. The wizard removes the complexity from security configuration with "auto-sensing" capabilities that minimize the amount of information that a user must provide during set-up of the device. Also, 3Com delivers easy-to-understand instructions that will have the user securely connected to the Internet.

The 3Com OfficeConnect Internet Firewall 25 uses stateful packet inspection technology to prevent unauthorized network access and Denial of Service attacks from the Internet. It can also restrict inappropriate use of the Internet by users on the LAN. It has two Ethernet ports and supports up to 25 LAN users. U.S. list price is $695.

The 3Com OfficeConnect Internet Firewall DMZ offers the same features as the Internet Firewall 25, but supports up to 100 LAN users and has an additional Ethernet DMZ port. This allows public servers (e.g. Web or FTP servers) on the LAN to be accessed from the Internet without exposing the network to attack. It is ideal for businesses conducting e-business or those planning to do so in the future. U.S. list price is $1,495.

New OfficeConnect Network Assistant Web-enabled Tutorial Tool
3Com is now offering a new version of its popular OfficeConnect Network Assistant CD-ROM that includes more than 20 3Com OfficeConnect products, from PC Cards to LAN Modems. The OfficeConnect Network Assistant v3.0 CD explains complex networking concepts in easy-to-understand terms and makes setting up and maintaining a small business network easier than ever before.

New Learning Center Courses
To help small businesses and resellers make informed networking decisions, 3Com offers free, online courses that introduce networking strategies aimed at the needs of small businesses. Courses are Web-based, so people can work through the course material at their own pace using their Web browsers. Users are able to start, exit or pause a course at any time.

In August, 3Com will offer two new courses on its Learning Center Web site. One course teaches small business owners and employees how to use the network as its IP-based telephone system. The other course teaches users how to select and install cabling to optimise the reliability and performance of small business networks.

Pricing and Availability
The 3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LAN Modem will be shipped into Australia and New Zealand immediately with the product available widely throughout Asia-Pacific by November 2000. There are plans to localise Network Assistant v3 CD-ROM tool for the Japanese, Mandarin and Korean markets in the near future.
