At RSA 2008 in San Francisco, Malcolm Gladwell — author of The Tipping Point and Blink — tells security professionals why too much information can impair judgement. As an example, he said emergency room doctors are much better at diagnosing chest pain accurately when they have only four data points (chest pain, instability, fluid in the lungs, and an electrocardiogram) instead of when they take into account factors such as patient age and whether the patient smokes.
