HP battery recall programme hits more laptops

Summary:The list of HP laptop models affected by overheating batteries has grown, according to a US government agency

HP has recalled over 160,000 laptop batteries in the US after reports of burn injuries, smoke inhalation and fire damage to properties.

The latest recall is an expansion of those announced in May 2009 and May 2010, and concerns some laptop models that are used by UK businesses.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said on Friday that HP had recalled 162,600 additional batteries. Since May 2010, HP has received 40 reports of batteries that ruptured or overheated, with seven burns injuries, 36 incidents of damage to properties and one smoke inhalation injury.

New to the list of laptops with potentially affected batteries is the HP Compaq 6520s, which joins the 651x, 671x and 6720 models, along with HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario models whose batteries were the subject of recalls in 2009 and 2010.

HP had not responded to a request for comment at the time of writing.
