Hewlett-Packard's EliteBook 8740w mobile workstation is already quite a powerful portable machine, and now HP has stepped up this model's graphics processor considerably.

According to Electronista, HP will soon start shipping the EliteBook 8740w with the option of Nvidia's newest Quadro FX 5000M GPU. Current graphics card options for this 17-inch HP notebook are Nvidia Quadro FX 2800M, Nvidia Quadro FX 3800M and ATI FirePro M7820.

Pricing and a definite release date for this upgraded version of the 8740 hasn't been announced yet, but the current model starts at $1,999. That's a large chunk of change, but the base model is powered by an Intel Core i5-520M processor and it includes 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 320GB hard drive, and an ATI FirePro M7820 GPU. So with the new GPU option, that price is sure to jump high.

For reference, additional customization options include other Core i5/i7 chips, a 256GB SSD, a DVD/Blu-ray combo drive, and up to 16GB of RAM.
