The Pre 3 will launch in the UK before the end of August, HP has confirmed.

The device — the second Pre since HP's purchase of Palm, which was completed in July, 2010 — will launch in the UK before the end of August, Paul Hunter, general manager of the Personal Systems Group at HP in the UK, told ZDNet UK on Tuesday.

He also confirmed the company is looking to expand the eco-system surrounding its WebOS-based devices, such as the Pre 3 and TouchPad tablet.

"[The Pre 3] It's coming this month," Hunter said. "We're also focusing on expanding the eco-system to get more apps and developers working on the WebOS platform." However, rather than taking on Apple or Google's app repositories, Hunter said HP's focus is on producing quality, local apps that will be used, rather than having to sift through thousands upon thousands.

HP is also working on bringing the WebOS platform to PCs during 2012, as an accompaniment to, rather than replacement for, a Windows operating system. Hunter could not say whether WebOS PCs would use the OS as a dual-boot option, or effectively as an overlay on top of Windows but noted that by providing both, enterprises could maintain support for legacy applications.

On Monday, HP began issuing a WebOS update for the TouchPad, which it said would generally improve stability and performance of the device, as well as adding new functionality to core apps.
