HSBC Australia pulls CIO from own ranks

HSBC has appointed Brenton Hush to the position of chief information officer for its Australian operations.

Hush, who has been serving as the bank's deputy CIO for the past 18 months, replaces Chuck Stegan as its Australia and New Zealand CIO.

Hush's prior appointments have seen him head up General Pants Group's IT operations, as well as senior positions within sporting events such as the 2003 Rugby World Cup, the 20002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

HSBC's CEO Stuart Davis said Hush's will fulfil the bank's "build once, deploy many" IT program.

Earlier this year, Stegan told ZDNet.com.au that HSBC will be rolling out a new fraud detection system for its Australian operations -- one that has already been deployed in the US followed by secondary markets such as Australia. Stegan said the bank's Australian operations typically use systems that have been deployed in other parts of the world.

Departing CIO Chuck Stegan will be moving to Hong Kong to head up HSBC's Asia Pacific IT operations.
