HSBC customers had problems withdrawing money from cash machines and paying by HSBC debit cards on Sunday after a hardware failure, according to the bank.
Customers trying to use non-HSBC cash machines could not withdraw money from around 17.00 to 17.45 BST on Sunday, and HSBC spokesman told ZDNet UK on Monday. The cash-machine issue sparked further IT problems, making it impossible for some customers to pay by HSBC debit card until approximately 19.00.
"Sorry again for the problems this evening," HSBC's press office said in a Twitter post on Sunday. "An IT hardware failure affected some ATM and card transactions."
Visa accepted the majority of debit-card payments on behalf of HSBC during the IT failure as part of a stand-in payments service, said the spokesman.
HSBC had a major ATM and internet-banking outage in November 2011 that was caused by a faulty server.
