HTC revenues soar as Android 'picks up momentum'

HTC's revenues for the second quarter of 2010 were up more than 58 percent on the same quarter last year, the company announced on Tuesday.

The Taiwanese handset manufacturer took in NT$60.5bn (£1.2bn) in Q2 2010, which was a record high and better than its original guidance for the quarter.

In a presentation, HTC noted that Android — Google's operating system, upon which HTC bases handsets such as the Nexus One, Desire, Legend and Hero — was "successfully ramping globally", with "momentum picking up" since the start of 2010.

"The initial 2009 Android portfolio has proved to deliver better sell-through as well as longer product life cycles, and we are confident our 2010 Android portfolio will drive momentum around the world," the company said.

HTC does not just build Android phones — the company made its name producing Windows Mobile handsets that were rebranded by operators as, for example, O2's XDA range. HTC still makes Windows Mobile phones such as the HD mini, and is rumoured to be gearing up to release a Windows Phone 7 handset, the Gold, in November.
