This is pretty cool - iFixit have partnered with Wired and got their hands on an FBI tracking device. What did they do with it? Perform a teardown of course!
Some interesting findings from the teardown:
- The device is powered by four lithium-thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) D cell batteries, with each cell offering 13,000 mAh of power (twice the power capacity of the iPad 2 battery) - Batteries are priced at around $100 for a pack of 4!
- Batteries have a service life rated at 10 to 20 years
- The tracking device is attached to vehicles using powerful magnets
- The GPS signal processor is hand soldered (you can tell because the components don't line up)
iFixit give the tracking device a repairability score of -10 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair).
I hope the feds don't go kicking down the doors of iFixit ... I'd miss all the awesome teardowns!
