Apple's iMessage service is currently suffering from the third outage in three months, the Cupertino, California, company has confirmed today.
According to the iCloud service status page, iMessage and FaceTime have been down for "some users" since 1:33 p.m. PST.
Apple has promised that the text-messaging service will be returned to normal as soon as possible, but no exact time has been given at this stage.
As CNET's Steven Musil noted, it is the third outage of the service in three months, with users having similar issues with iMessage in September and October.
Apple introduced its SMS alternative service in October last year as part of iOS 5, allowing iOS users to message each other without being hit with an SMS charge from their telecommunications provider. Apple has subsequently carried the service over to the latest version of OS X, Mountain Lion.
At 16:41 p.m. PST, Apple confirmed that services had been restored after nearly 5 hours of downtime.
Updated at 1:46 p.m. AEDST: Added confirmation of services being restored.
