India's Foreign Secretary Sujhatha Singh and German Foreign Office's State Secretary Harald Braun met this week in Berlin, Germany, to exchange insights on how the two nations should expand their bilateral ties in high-technology cooperation and issues related to export control. According to a report by The Economic Times, the high-level meeting was part of a series of talks organized by the India-Germany High Technology Partnership Group

Both officials also discussed preparation for a second round of discussions to be held in New Delhi next year, which will include line ministries, the report noted, citing a press statement by India's Ministry of External Affairs.

The India-Germany High Technology Partnership Group was set up in April following the second India-Germany Intergovernmental Consultations in Berlin, during which the two government heads agreed to augment trade and cooperation in high technology.

Part of the discussions then included plans to promote German as a foreign language in India , in a bid to help boost the number of IT workers exported to the European market. OECD International Migration Division analyst Jonathan Chaloff told ZDNet Asia then that the broad agreement would have positive impact for India's education export industry.

Despite the ongoing euro-zone crisis last year, trade between both countries were projected to reach 20 billion euros (US$26.16 billion), up from US$23.56 billion in 2011, according to a 2012 report by Indo-Asian News Service, which added that Germany was the eighth largest foreign direct investor in India, contributing around US$4.9 billion.
