The combined sales of desk-based and mobile PCs in India hit 2.9 million units in the second quarter of 2012, driven primarily by entry-level products from vendors, according to Gartner.
Released Tuesday, the research firm's report said the 2.9 million units sold represented a 17 percent rise over the same time last year, with consumer buying making up 50 percent of total PC sales.
This growth is being primarily driven by entry-level products as vendors such as Hewlett-Packard (HP), Lenovo, Asus, and Samsung registering more than 50 percent growth in this market segment, it added.
"Consumer PC sales grew 24 percent sequentially, which emphasizes the fact that media tablets are not yet cannibalizing the PC market in India like in the West," added Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst at Gartner, in the report.
Ultrabooks, on the other hand, found it difficult to penetrate the market. But with the availability of the new Intel processor and declining price points, adoption is expected to rise in coming quarters, he added.
Lenovo top PC maker
Delving into vendor market share, Gartner noted that with 16.6 percent share with the 2011 leader Dell falling to fourth place with 12.9 percent. Acer, at 13.4 percent, and HP at 13.1 percent, made up the top four, it added.
Looking ahead, the research firm expectsin the next quarter due to the festive season in India and sustained education buying.
