Internode brings WiMax to new region

Adelaide-based internet service provider (ISP) Internode has gone live with new wireless internet coverage for residents living in rural South Australia.

Internode has extended its wireless internet coverage to residents in the surrounds of Berri, Black Hill, Blanchetown, Maggea, Murray Bridge, Ramco and Renmark via a WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) deployment.

Agile Communications, an Internode subsidiary, designed and built the wireless network. Operations and infrastructure manager for Agile Communications, Kym Cleggett said that the new WiMax services are about giving consumers more choice.

"The real beauty is that people in this region will not pay any more than if they were located right in the middle of Adelaide," he said.

The new WiMax offering has a theoretical maximum downstream speed of 12Mbps, with plans starting from $39.95 and ranging to $69.95, available via Internode's website.

The ISP's latest foray into WiMax comes after the company established a WiMax offering on the Yorke peninsula in South Australia two years ago.

The Yorke peninsula network initially connected 200 customers to a maximum theoretical speed of 6Mbps at a distance of 30 kilometres from the signal tower.
