iPhone 2.2 firmware beta 1 seeded to developers on 25 September 2008 contains some hints at more new features coming to the mobile OS, despite a changelog that lists only "compatibility testing."

  1. Ability to disable iPhone's auto-correction (see screen shot)
  2. Support for Japanese emoji icons
  3. Support for Google Street View in Google Maps

It was previously reported that 2.2 would contain some UI tweaks including moving the Google search field in mobile Safari and larger category icons in the App Store and revised “Tell a Friend” and “Report a Problem” buttons.

Still no word if firmware 2.2 will include background push notification which was missing from beta 1 builds.
