Juniper Networks buys cloud management startup AppFormix

AppFormix's software platform leverages streaming analytics and machine learning in a distributed architecture for use in cloud environments.

Juniper Networks announced Thursday it plans to acquire AppFormix, providers of cloud operations management and optimization technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2013 by former Microsoft and Cisco executive Sumeet Singh, AppFormix's software platform leverages streaming analytics and machine learning in a distributed architecture for use in cloud environments. The platform works with any OpenStack or Kubernetes distribution and includes services for real-time and historic monitoring, visibility, and dynamic performance optimization.

Juniper said it plans to pair AppFormix's telemetry and operations management technology with its Contrail product line to improve cloud orchestration, security, accounting, and planning.

"We recognize our customers' needs and desires for a self-driving infrastructure; one that is optimized, secure and automated," said Juniper CTO Pradeep Sindhu. "With the acquisition of AppFormix, we're accelerating our vision to use software automation and intelligence to deliver a smarter network and more simplified operations for our customers around the world."

AppFormix will remain an independent brand under Juniper and will continue marketing its platform under its current name. In a blog post, Singh assured current AppFormix customers that services will remain consistent during the transition.

The acquisition follows a deal Juniper announced in August to buy Aurrion, makers of silicon-photonics technology used in high-speed networking systems. At the time, Juniper said it planned to use Aurrion to bolster its optical networking technology and enable the company to bring advanced networking products to market more quickly.
